What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica?

All patients are different regarding the way they experience discomfort from sciatica.  For some, it is a condition that can be debilitating and incredibly painful.  For others, their pain may be more infrequent and merely irritating.  However, sciatica always has the possibility of getting worse.

Sciatica occurs when an injury in the back affects the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body.  It extends from the spine down through the patient’s buttocks and down the backs of the patient’s legs.  Usually sciatica only affects one side of the body.  The pain is usually described as a sharp pain, rather than a dull ache.  It originates in the lower back and usually radiates down one of the patient’s legs.  The patient might experience numbing sensations or tingling in addition to pain.  While the pain originates from the lower back, and is often accompanied by lower back pain, quite often the discomfort the patient feels in the leg is more severe than the back pain.

Sciatica can make movement very difficult.  While the patient is lying down, some relief may be experienced.  However, sitting, standing and walking can be very challenging.  Patients might also experience pain, numbness or tingling in the foot or ankle.

When To Seek Immediate Treatment

Very rarely are the symptoms of sciatica so severe that they require emergency treatment. If the patient experiences symptoms that progressively get worse, it’s important to seek medical advice.  If the patient has sciatica in both legs, accompanied by bladder or bowel problems, including incontinence, it might indicate a more severe medical issue is present that requires surgery.  The patient should consult a physician immediately.

Sciatica is a very painful condition.  Too many patients continue to live in pain when they don’t have to. Dr. Gregory P. LaGana is the experienced chiropractor Cambridge MA patients have been depending on for over three decades to provide efficient pain relief.

Chiropractor AllstonPatients who have experienced the pain of sciatica know how much it limits their daily activities and interferes with their lives in general.  Fortunately, there are treatments available that, in time, will give them some relief.  It is important for patients to get a professional opinion as soon as possible to prevent the condition from getting worse over a period of time, which is typical with sciatica.

What Types of Sciatica Treatment Are Available?

The patient’s chiropractor may recommend a few different methods of treating sciatica, along with an exercise program.  Many chiropractors initially recommend heat or ice, applying every two hours for twenty minutes.  Depending on the severity of the injury and the patient’s response, either one may be used.  However, most patients recognize heat to be the most effective.  Quite often, heat and ice are alternated.  The goal is to reduce inflammation.

Quite often, chiropractors will also provide the patient with spinal adjustments or chiropractic manipulation as a way to alleviate their pain.  Through improved spinal column alignment, the symptoms associated with sciatica can be diminished.

Massage is another technique that many patients find to be helpful in relieving their sciatica symptoms.  Massage works to release endorphins in the body, which naturally relieve pain.  It also improves the circulation of blood in the body and relaxes the muscles that are more tense because of the level of pain.

Once inflammation is under control and the patient is able, many chiropractors will recommend physical therapy.  Physical therapy is very useful in building up the strength in the muscles surrounding the injury.  Back pain is often caused because of abdominal muscles that have grown weak due to lack of exercise or activity.  Physical therapy is an excellent option to rebuild the strength in those muscles, which results in less pain.

For any patient with sciatica, it is vital to not put off getting help.  The pain can be so debilitating, and treatments are available.  If you need a skilled chiropractor, Allston MA patients have relied on the expertise of Dr. Gregory P. LaGana for sciatica pain relief for years.  He is eager to serve you.

Chiropractor Brookline MA- What you need to know about Sciatica

If you’re looking for a chiropractor in Brookline, MA, Dr. Gregory P. LaGana is located at 1051 Beacon Street in Brookline.  He has specialized in Low Back Pain and Sciatica since 1977.

What Is Sciatica?

One of the most painful conditions a patient can experience is sciatica.  The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the human body.  It is composed of nerve roots that branch out through the spine in the lower back.  Sciatica refers to the pain and discomfort a patient experiences when this large nerve is pinched.  Injuries such as herniated discs are commonly what cause sciatic nerve pain.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica is not, in itself, a medical diagnosis.  Rather, it refers to the symptoms of another underlying medical condition.  Sciatica results in pain in the leg, and it is often accompanied by sensations of tingling, numbness or weakness.  Discomfort begins in the patient’s lower back and travels through one of the buttocks and down the sciatic  nerve in the leg.  These sensations are often constant and they are worse when the patient is sitting down; although standing or walking is very difficult as well.  Rather than sensing an ache in the back or the leg, the patient will experience a burning or tingling feeling that makes movement very difficult.

Treatment of Sciatica

Patients with sciatica very rarely develop the condition before the age of twenty.  It is a condition that occurs over a period of time, and isn’t generally the result of a single injury. Most patients with sciatica can expect to get better over the course of a few weeks or months.  Usually, non-surgical treatment is all that is needed for the patient to experience relief.  Very rarely, a patient might experience more severe symptoms such as bowel or bladder problems and weakness in the leg.  These are neurological symptoms that indicate a more severe condition.  In cases like these, surgery is usually recommended.

Patients who are suffering from sciatica don’t have to live their lives in pain.  Proper treatment can bring significant relief.  Because Dr. Gregory P. LaGana has a proven track record as a chiropractor in Brookline MA patients have relied on his expertise to bring them pain relief from sciatica.

Chiropractor Boston MA- Chiropractic Manipulation

Chiropractor Boston MAIf you’re looking for a chiropractor in Boston MA, Dr. Gregory P. LaGana is located just minutes away at 1051 Beacon Street in nearby Brookline.  He specializes in Low Back Pain and Sciatica.  Dr. LaGana has been practicing for more than 35 years.

What Is Chiropractic Manipulation?

Many patients may require chiropractic manipulation (also referred to as chiropractic adjustment or spinal manipulation) when their vertebrae fail to function properly, or exhibit patterns of movement that are not normal.  These adjustments are performed manually by the chiropractor and have been proven to reduce pain.  This results in an improvement in range of motion, reduction of nerve irritability and improved overall physical function. Chiropractic manipulation is a characteristic treatment for Lower Back Pain.

Benefits of Chiropractic Manipulation

Patients who undergo chiropractic manipulation can expect a variety of physical changes. In addition to an increase in their range of motion and decreased pain, their pain tolerance will increase.  Any muscle tension the patient was experiencing will decrease.  There is an immediate increase in blood flow and skin temperature, along with lower blood pressure.

Chiropractic manipulation is also proven to improve the patient’s blood chemistry levels. Melatonin, which is responsible for regulating various hormones in the body as well as maintaining the circadian rhythm, will increase.  Endorphin levels will also increase, which raises the body’s ability to tolerate pain.

Treatment Recommendations

The frequency and number of recommended treatments is different for each patient, based upon the severity of the injury.  Other factors, such as the patient’s anxiety level, history of depression and personal coping strategies, are all given careful consideration before prescribing any treatment.

Patients should not have to live with Low Back Pain.  Dr. Gregory P. LaGana has been the chiropractor Boston, MA residents have depended on for decades to move toward living their lives pain-free.
