Introducing Brookline Chiropractor Dr. Gregory LaGana

I didn’t know much about chiropractic—simply put, I was a skeptic—but I was desperate. All I knew was my right shoulder and right arm felt like they were losing strength, my neck was in pain, and I couldn’t work. Reluctantly, I took a friend’s advice and went to see a chiropractor. Everything, from the examination to the explanation of the exam findings, was eye-opening to me. It didn’t seem opposed to medicine, but different—what I guess is now called complementary - alternative. Within a short time of starting chiropractic treatment, I was able to resume work and soon after that was pain-free.

I was planning on going into public service (criminal law) and had taken a year-long sabbatical after college graduation when all of this happened. After several months of soul-searching, I decided that becoming a chiropractor and giving others the benefit of chiropractic care could be more meaningful and personally fulfilling.

I received my undergraduate degree at the University of Miami (Florida), class of 1971, and my doctorate of chiropractic in 1976 from the Columbia Institute of Chiropractic (NYC), now the New York College of Chiropractic.

My years of chiropractic study included the same initial core curriculum as medical school (biochemistry, microbiology, public health, neurology, advanced anatomy and physiology). Later, when the medical curriculum focuses on surgical procedures and drug therapies, chiropractic devotes special emphasis on spinal radiology, spinal adjusting techniques, nutritional counseling, and patient care at the NY Chiropractic Clinic. We have been in continuous private practice in Brookline, MA since 1977. This is our 30th year in practice.

My practice philosophy and care objectives are simple and straight-forward:

  1. I believe a “pro-active” approach to any health issue is more sensible and successful that a “reactive” one.
  2. My goal is to treat each patient with the clinical excellence and respect that I would want for myself or my family.

We initially concentrate on relieving each patient’s pain and the underlying causes that brings that patient into our office. We are equally committed to giving each patient the knowledge and tools to help them prevent reoccurring episodes and to stop potential future spinal weakening and damage.

Two major conditions seem to dominate my practice the last few years as a result of excessive computer use. Between work and home usage, people average 4-6-8 hours daily. The poor posture, repetitive motion and physical weakening (lack of exercise) result in "rounded shoulder syndrome" with its associated headaches, neck pain, restriction of motion, shoulder tension, and carpal tunnel are all directly related to computer use. Second are the negative effects on the low back spinal vertebrae and musculature, including low back pain, stiffness, pain changing positions, disc bulging, and resultant sciatica.

We encourage our patients to actively participate in regaining and maintaining the highest possible level of functional health they can.

I have been happily married for over 30 years. We started our family later than most, so I know from personal experience the importance of maintaining ones health, vitality, and physical abilities to keep up with my two children—I drag them to the batting cages every baseball season. When I am not actively working in the office, I devote my time to my family and family activities, and taking advantage of city living.

My approach to health doesn’t stop at my office. I try to exercise daily (stretching, core stability, and weight-training on a balance ball). My family and I get regular chiropractic care. In my case, weekly would be ideal due to my own anatomy, but a minimum of twice monthly. Just like working out or brushing and flossing your teeth, regular chiropractic care gives you a certain predictable result, and I know that prevention is better than crisis management. Having grown up in the classic Italian household, my diet has always been well-balanced (Mediterranean) with emphasis on fresh vegetables, grains, fruits, and lean proteins.

I consider myself an excellent listener and look forward to meeting you in person and discussing your specific health concerns.

Dr. Gregory Asks some important questions of interest to Brookline residents - Chiropractor Brookline Dr. Gregory Asks...

How long does it take to form a bone spur?
Many who begin chiropractic care think their problem happened "last week when you bent over funny." But pictures of the spine tell a different story. Chiropractors know it can take your body years to deposit the calcium necessary to form a bone spur. It's your body's response to stress due to gravity or joint malfunction. And chiropractic care can help.
What's your plan to deal with drug-resistant 'super germs'?
Chiropractors have always been concerned with the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, accelerating the mutation of microbes that make "wonder" drugs increasingly ineffective. My strategy? Do everything possible to bolster my immune system through proper diet, rest, exercise, clean air, pure water and an optimally functioning nervous system with regular chiropractic care.
